The 1930s were a heyday for Italian soccer under the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini. The Italian national team, also known as the Azzurri, won several important tournaments during this period, including the 1934 and 1938 World Cups. The successes of Italian soccer in the 1930s were closely linked to the political regime of fascism. Mussolini used sport as a propaganda tool to demonstrate Italy's strength and nationalism. The national team became a symbol of national unity and strength and helped to legitimize the fascist regime. Soccer under fascism was an important part of the regime's propaganda and identity-building in Italy.

The lecture will show you how soccer was used as a mass event to mobilize the population and create a sense of national unity. At the same time, however, it will also look at how soccer was a means of excluding and discriminating against certain groups. Jewish and foreign players in particular faced numerous obstacles and prejudices in fascist Italy. By analyzing historical sources and eyewitness accounts, the aim is to provide a detailed picture of how soccer was used as an instrument of power and control under fascism. Particular emphasis will be placed on including the perspective of those who suffered under the regime. The lecture is aimed not only at historians and academics, but also at a broad audience interested in the history of soccer and its connection to fascism and political instrumentalization. Using numerous historical images and documents, the audience will be transported back to a time when soccer was more than just a sport - it was a political instrument that contributed to both the unification and division of society.
