Between cheerfulness and melancholy

Due sopra il Basso present their new program "Zwischen Heiterkeit und Melancholie" on tour.

The different perspectives on the theme of rejection form the central theme of the evening. In his songs, the English composer John Dowland (1563-1626) sheds light on the various reactions to rejection. The realization "She does not love me!" can be followed by a wide variety of reactions, ranging from "I am wretched and will remain alone forever." to "I won't be discouraged and will try again tomorrow." to "Let her burn in hell!". The music reinforces the changing moods in the most lively way.

Of course, this program is also mainly - but not only - about wasted love: drunken soldiers who can't finance their booze, a pregnant doe who lays a knight to rest, the familiar singing of the beauty of Arcadian climes and their inhabitants. The English-Italian collage leaves nothing to be desired in terms of colorfulness. Pieces by John Dowland, Thomas Ravenscroft, Thomas Campion, Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger, Claudio Monteverdi and Tarquinio Merula can be heard.

A special feature is that Max Hattwich accompanies the English program exclusively on the Rennaissan lute and the Italian program exclusively on the theorbo.
