Duration approx. 2 hours, two intermissions
Until recently, Alexander Abdukarimov, Arshak Ghalumyan and Oleksandr Shpak were stars of the Berlin State Ballet. Last year, they founded their own ensemble: the Berlin Ballet Company. Most of the current 13 dancers have enjoyed remarkable careers, some of them also with the Staatsballett, while others are promising newcomers. "We want to go out, we want to bring the beauty of classical dance to people who might not go to the theater on their own - but without making any artistic concessions," reveals Oleksandr Shpak in an interview with dance critic Dorion Weickmann. In keeping with this intention, the company performs in Berlin in places where dance has not previously been at home: in the Pfefferberg socio-cultural center or in a synagogue in Prenzlauer Berg.
The three-part evening Initium shows the artistic DNA of the company and the characteristic signature of the two in-house choreographers Arshak Ghalumyan and Alexander Abdukarimov. Both were strongly influenced in their own dance careers by the works of Spanish artist Nacho Duato. The dynamic energy of the young dancers, combined with the artistic maturity of the experienced ensemble members, generate a synergy that makes a visit to the performance a very special experience
