What a fascinating idea: at the South Pole, at the North Pole, in the far west and in the far east, people raise their eyes at night and look at the stars. "In a time before writing, our starry sky was a movie theater of the night," writes Raoul Schrott. But are people connected to each other through the stories they have always attributed to the stars? This is one of the questions that Raoul Schrott explores by mapping and narrating. Seventeen times he also raises his eyes and looks at the stars: in ancient Egypt, among the Tuareg, on Tahiti, in China and in other places, at other times. Our Big Dipper was a divine parrot for the Maya, the one-legged god of thunderstorms for the Incas and a moose for the Inuit. Raoul Schrott always finds stories in the images, which he combines into a great epic of human history. Truly wondrously connected in their diversity.
Raoul Schrott thus continues his work of combining art history and science and extending it into the lives of people today. Looking at the stars - so old and so full of sadness and hope, because the stars convey the essence of existence in their light. And Raoul Schrott's magnificent book "Atlas der Sternenhimmel" (Atlas of the Starry Sky) opens up a new, delightfully universal celestial canopy for the audience: in Mannheim's planetarium.
The reading takes place in cooperation with the Mannheim Planetarium.
