The world is burning at all ends, and here she is, saying: "I'm proud to be a writer. Now is the right time for us, for art, for poetry, for the artificial." Mely Kiyak is not saying this in the Weimar Republic, when literature responded to the increasingly oppressive reality with clear form, sharp thoughts and a completely unpathetic style. No, she is saying it today, a century later. "We can only defend ourselves with what we have. These are the songs, the poems, the novels. We have to counter the aesthetics of being disgusting with an aesthetics of being human."
The right woman, therefore, to celebrate authors of the Weimar Republic and to test the limits of what is known in literary history books as "New Objectivity". The motto of the evening: "You are not killing the spirit!" Mely Kiyak will reveal who wrote it during the course of the evening. At her side will be a friend and at the same time the man with the coolest, clearest mind currently to be found on German stages and in front of public cameras - Max Uthoff! Political cabaret artist, known from "Die Anstalt", the show that uses satire to provide enlightenment. Together, Mely Kiyak and Max Uthoff clarify whether only art can really save us. Two radiant personalities who celebrate with us on the centenary of the New Objectivity in Mannheim those who even then did not abandon art and the humanist spirit.
