I NĀ KIʻI MA MUA, NĀ KIʻI MA HOPE | IMAGES OF PAST FUTURES

A curated program of moving image works from Hawaiʻi, followed by an open discussion. The screening considers the ways in which artists in Hawaiʻi, as elsewhere, are simultaneously guided by their past and their future, and takes its cue from the oft-quoted ʻōlelo noʻeau, a Hawaiian proverb and poetic saying: "I ka wā ma mua, ka wā ma hope", the future lies in the past.

I nā kiʻi ma mua, nā kiʻi ma hope (2022-) is an ongoing screening series by an intergenerational group of contributors that showcases past and present moving image works that are by, about, and/or related to Hawaiʻi. The series has included two screenings in 2022 and 2023 at Aupuni Space, Kakaʻako on Honolulu.
