Hofklänge | Summer Cologne

Young talents from the University of Music and Dance present the full range of their skills. From 22.7. - 27.7.2024, concerts of different eras and musical styles will take place in the inner courtyard of the university - from baroque to romantic, classical to pop, violin to guitar.

All concerts are free of charge and start at 8 pm!
Tickets are allocated on a first come - first served basis.

• Monday, July 22: Osimun Quartet

Founded just a few years ago, the ensemble has already won many prizes and various scholarships.

Founded in 2021, the Osimun Saxophone Quartet is already a member of the renowned Netherlands String Quartet Academy. The four Spanish saxophonists receive lessons from Quatuor Ebène and Eberhard Feltz. They are also members of the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA). The Cologne-based ensemble also receives lessons from Prof. José Luis Estelles. The Osimun Quartet is a finalist in the Dutch Classical Talent competition (the final will be held in June 2025), has won first prize in the Storioni competition, has been sponsored by the Dörken Foundation and has twice received a scholarship from Jeunesses Musicales Germany.

Through its own transcriptions, the Osimun Quartet brings new color to the chamber music literature and at the same time expands the genuine repertoire for saxophone quartet through collaboration with contemporary composers.

• Tuesday, July 23: Vulfpeck Combo & Montepulciano Songwriter Camp

The repertoire of the Vulfpeck Band will be taken up and rearranged by the combo of the same name. In addition, a live band of students will present the impressive results of the last songwriter camp.

Vulfpeck is a band from Michigan that undoubtedly belongs to the elite of the current funk scene and is characterized by extremely precise rhythmic perfection. With catchy melodies, minimalist arrangements and energetic live performances, the band has built up a loyal fan base. The Vulfpeck Combo takes up the repertoire of the band from Michigan at the HfMT Cologne under the direction of Prof. Jan Klinkenberg, rearranges it and brings it to the stage at the Hofkonzerte. Beforehand, participants of the recent songwriter camp in Montepulciano will present new songs written there, supported by a live band of students under the direction of Anikó Kanthak, Prof. Jono Podmore, Prof. Jan Klinkenberg and Marvin Böttger.

• Wednesday, July 24: Bella Colonia - guitar sounds from Bella Italia

La vita è più bella con la musica! Guitar sounds from Bella Italia from different eras.

After the students from Prof. Hans-Werner Huppertz's class dedicated themselves to the music of Spain last year, the young musicians are now bringing the guitar sounds of Bella Italia to beautiful Cologne. The musical spectrum is broad: We encounter classical salon heroes such as Mauro Giuliani, who astounded the audience with their virtuoso variations on themes of the time. There will also be music by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who, with his flair for the possibilities of the guitar, left behind some of the most beautiful works in the repertoire. The program is complemented by Baroque music and - how could it be otherwise with the guitar - Latin American music by descendants of Italian emigrants ... la vita è più bella con la musica!

• Thursday, July 25: String quintets - Bruckner and Dvorák

An adagio by Bruckner enchants and the string quintet in E flat major takes us back to Dvorák's American period.

But the pearl of the quintet is the Adagio, one of the noblest, most transfigured, tender and beautiful-sounding works ever written in recent times, Theodor Helm praised Bruckner's work in 1884. This Adagio will enchant the audience at the 4th Court Concert, followed by Dvorák's String Quintet in E flat major - a composition that was written somewhere in Iowa during Dvorák's American period - with the slightly wistful, elusive sounds and melodies of his music "from the new world".

• Friday, July 26: Limes Quintet

The wind quintet of four young musicians will give an insight into the competition program for the upcoming ARD Music Competition.

They met at the Ensemble Modern's "epoche f" master class in 2020 and founded the LIMES Quintet shortly afterwards: five young musicians studying at universities in Cologne, Berlin, Paris and Vienna, who are scholarship holders of the German National Academic Foundation and the German Foundation for Musical Life as well as members of the Karajan Academy and the Ensemble Modern. The wind quintet is currently preparing to take part in the upcoming ARD Music Competition and in this concert will give an insight into the varied competition program for one of the most renowned international music competitions of all.

• Saturday, July 27: Summer Feeling with Daniel Migliosi & Band

Daniel Migliosi and band play modern jazz on the last summer evening of the Hofklänge.

Trumpeter Daniel Migliosi and his band will perform at the end of the court concerts, promising the perfect sound for a summer evening of modern jazz. Together with Oli Lutz on bass, Alex Parzhuber on drums and Maxim Burtsev on piano, the groove can be relied on and the atmosphere is perfect for bidding the audience and university farewell to the summer vacations.
