Why do we prefer Ukrainians to Syrians, Afghans and Indians? Because they are our neighbors. They are close to us. That's unfair but human. When my neighbor, with whom I've lived next door for years, is attacked, I suffer with him. - Of course I do! - Well, I don't really suffer. But if I accidentally bump into him in the stairwell, I mumble in passing: "I'm really sorry. I'll be fine." - If the same thing happens to someone one floor below, I make it clear, "Hey, I can't look after the whole household. I've got enough on my plate with the idiot next door." - If someone from the house next door has to believe it, I say to myself, how am I supposed to know that there's another house next door?

Anyone who expects democracy to function continuously and the resultingsatisfaction has not understood the system.
