Twelve scientists, including R. J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), are on a research mission in the Antarctic. They discover a destroyed research station and with it a deformed corpse, which they take with them for examination. What the scientists don't know is that an alien is responsible for the destruction. This life form is particularly threatening because it takes over the bodies of other creatures almost unnoticed. When the men take in a frightened dog, they don't think much of it at first. Soon, however, no one can trust anyone else...
