After the dome almost flew off in April 2024, LORDI will be spooking us again in 2025 in a manner that is as eerily weird as it is earworm-heavy. The Finnish rockers honor us again!
LORDI's latest work, "Limited Deadition", is a unique blend of nostalgia and heavy metal of the most creative kind that carries a special spirit. The band from Rovaniemi, Lapland, which was founded in 1992, has never stuck to the rules when it comes to songwriting & co. This is also the case on their new album, which pays tribute to the toy culture of the 80s, which is particularly close to the heart of frontman Mr Lordi, who has always had a weakness for collecting action figures and other objects. The title of the record is a typical LORDI play on words, which once again underlines their sense of innovation when it comes to the choice of subject matter and should secure the track a place in every fan's collection.
Their spectacular ESC victory in 2006 in particular brought LORDI international attention, as it allowed them to spread their lively, horror-inspired music all over the world. Their immense creative power is demonstrated above all by a look at their discography to date, which includes 18 studio albums, including classics such as "Get Heavy" and "The Arockalypse", and offers enormous variety with their monster-sized 7-CD milestone "Lordiversity" [2021].
Despite such milestones, 2024 also had plenty of unusual things in store for the band: for example, the monsters were featured as models with vegan handbags in Vogue Scandinavia to express their animal-friendly attitude, which also caused quite a stir outside the Scandinavian media landscape. Another highlight was 'Made Of Metal' - an anthem resulting from the fusion of LORDI's musical skills and the exciting technology of cell phone manufacturer OnePlus. After an arena tour with SABATON and BABYMETAL, LORDI also returned to local venues as headliners in 2024 as part of a multi-week tour - and in between such impressive activities, LORDI also managed to record their new album "Limited Deadition", which continues their exploration of AOR realms, but with a heavier, more metallic edge.
"I would say that we have created a kind of sibling album to its predecessor," reveals Mr. Lordi. "Of course, the AOR influence can't be denied, but "Limited Deadition" offers more metal in terms of riffs and the speed of some tracks." Even though the aforementioned shows with the two giants of the scene gave the quintet additional impetus, LORDI's plan for their new album did not change in the slightest. "We've always written what we feel like and what just bubbles out of us," he emphasizes. How true!
Limited Deadition" was recorded at IluSound Studio and Finnvox Studios (Helsinki, Finland), while Mr. Lordi took care of the production himself. Mixed by Ilkka Herkman and mastered by Pauli Saastamoinen, the final result is full of dedication down to the last detail, as Mr Lordi himself also took care of the artwork and layout design. The loose theme "Toys of the 80s" links the tracks and focuses on the frontman's aforementioned passion for collecting, which has accompanied him since childhood. Incidentally, his parents are to blame for his obsession, as they didn't give him all the figures he wanted back then - and this addiction continues right up to "Limited Deadition".
Mr. Lordi comments: "But the theme really only forms the rough framework of the album, even though I've been fascinated by all these toys for a long time. I've just always collected different stuff, almost hoarded it. I can't even remember which item started my collection, but my craving more or less goes back to "Muppet Show" figures, followed by "Star Wars" and "E.T." items. The latter is also my favorite movie." A normal child would probably have been satisfied with this, but the world was obviously not on Mr. Lordi's radar: "The most expensive and desirable products were simply not within my parents' means, which is probably why my addiction became all the greater in adulthood. Because then I finally had the financial means to scour the entire internet and buy myself all the figures I had been dreaming of for so long," he laughingly explains the 'root of all evil'.
Opening with another characteristic 'SCG' chapter, LORDI's latest work begins with tracks like 'Legends Are Made Of Clichés' and the lead single 'Syntax Terror', in which irresistible melodies merge with cinematic allusions. 'Skelephant In The Room' continues the tradition of super-catchy choruses, before 'SCGTV Saturday Night Man Event' brings back memories of 80s sales television, which probably had no small influence on the album's detailed booklet. The ballad 'Collectable', on the other hand, captivates with emotional depth and reminiscences of PINK FLOYD's 'The Great Gig In The Sky'.
The second half of the album picks up the pace again with songs such as 'Fangoria', 'Hellizabeth' and 'Retropolis', which are already likely to become new fan favorites. The title track is again dedicated to the problems that collectors face in today's digital age. An ode to all those who still appreciate physical products, before 'You Might Be Deceased' closes the album with a certain wistfulness.
Far from being the conclusion of LORDI's adventure, "Limited Deadition" is a vibrant and exciting new chapter. As their popularity continues to grow and their refreshing approach to music and show is far from over, LORDI's future looks more promising than it has for a long time. It goes without saying that the new album will once again take the monster train to the world's stages, which is why its followers can already look forward to a revamped show with new tricks and surprises. "You can expect monsters and the finest melodic heavy rock, but I don't want to reveal any more yet," jokes Mr. Lordi. Anyone who gets involved with "Limited Deadition" will definitely be rewarded with a monstrous adventure. This album is not just a new record, but a celebration of LORDI's unrivaled inventiveness and enduring legacy.
