HATSUKOI: JIGOKU-HEN The Girl Nanami Susumu Hani Japan 1968 35 mm Japanese original 108'
Hani's best-known film explores the relationship of a young couple in a stylistic tour de force between quasi-documentary footage and hallucinogenic flashbacks and fantasies. Nanami has retained her innocence despite her work as a nude model for rich businessmen, while Shun is sexually inexperienced and inhibited. His excursions into the shady world of Nanami's jobs, in which sexual obsessions, violence and power are closely linked, are as fascinating as they are frightening for him and set his own memory process in motion. Flashbacks reveal Shun's traumatic childhood and thus the cause of his fears and sexual inhibitions, as well as his not unproblematic friendship with a little girl. Hani co-wrote the screenplay with underground filmmaker and author Shuji Terayama. It not only takes us deep into the psyche and sexuality of young people, but also into Tokyo's subculture, which vibrates with energy.
