Harz – Paris – Ohio. Literarische Reisen 1826-1848 zwischen Aufbruch und Enttäuschung

In the organizer's words:

The Vormärz period is a time of mobility. People wandered and traveled to a whole new extent. The reasons for this lay in the social movements of the time, as travel was often a sign of flight - from the Philistines, from censorship, from the suppression of freedom of expression, from poverty. Well over half a million people in the German-speaking regions alone decided to set off for a promising 'new world'.

At this stimulating literary evening, the audience can embark on a journey back to the turbulent times 200 years ago. Accompanying the special exhibition "Everything as if enchanted", this student project explores various literary approaches to the topic of travel in the Vormärz period.

The actor Steffen Reuber will read excerpts from Heinrich Heine's "Harzreise" (1824), Charles Sealsfield's "Die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika" (1827) and Fanny Lewald's "Erinnerungen aus dem Jahr 1848" (1850), which will be commented on by the students. In cooperation with students of the seminar "Travel Literature of the Vormärz" by Prof. Oesterhelt at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.
