Since its premiere in 1893, Humperdinck's most famous opera Hansel and Gretel has remained popular and has become almost synonymous with the first family visit to the opera for generations. "Little brother, come dance with me!" - "Suse, dear Suse, what's rustling in the straw?" - dancing siblings, dew and sand men, witch and parents: a panopticon of all 19th century fairy tale performances. And yet: a story full of deprivation, hunger and the desire for abundance with a clear moral: "When the need rises to the highest, the Lord God reaches out to us!" And in Richard Jones' opulent, colorful production, a real must-see!
