This quote by GDR artist and regime critic Annemirl Bauer is at the end of the documentary film "Die Unbeugamen". The focus of this DOK film: women of the GDR, different life stories of publicly known faces - but also "completely normal" GDR citizens. Compared to the West, the East propagated complete equality. And yes, there were kindergarten places, full-time working mothers who were materially independent... But the GDR system did not (at all) correspond to a truly realized equality of the sexes. It is precisely these nuances that the film relates through interviews and archive images: 15 self-confident women tell how patriarchal structures also existed in the GDR despite state-imposed equality. The film reflects the impressive life achievements of East German women and their fight for equal opportunities in a moving and captivating way.
