Gustl has never been the most popular. Never the most attractive or the most interesting in the room. He drinks, plays cards and has occasional affairs where he actually only plays second fiddle. He only has one close friend and when this friend gives him a ticket to the Christmas Oratorio, he goes. However, when he leaves the opera, he becomes a different person. His reputation is ruined and his honor is gone. Gustl's life is over. At least that's how he sees it. Gustl draws the line himself. For him, there is no other way out.
The Stream of Consciousness by Arthur Schnitzler is one of the first stories in this narrative style. Schnitzler takes the reader on a journey into the psyche of a problematic man and his logic, which in places has not changed for more than a hundred years and remains thoroughly relevant today within the polarizing ideas about one's own gender.
