Miss Anna

Theatrical installation

by Laura Remmler and folklicht*

"The Feierabendhaus is intended to provide a peaceful home for the country's teachers in need of rest. God forbid!" (Building capsule 1896) Was that a wish? An order? Or even a curse? Until the last Fräulein died, the house fulfilled this mission for almost 90 years. Since the 1980s, the house has also granted access to scholarship holders from the Herzog August Library. It was there for its residents for 125 years. Through two world wars, through collective and individual hardships. It was a place for social community, illness, comfort, ageing and dying. It was a temporary home for scientists from all over the world.

Now it is empty. Empty of people. Left to its own devices. Free.

Can we hear it breathe a sigh of relief? Is it relieved? Is the Feierabendhaus calling it a day? Self-care? Does it feel liberated or lonely? Does it miss its humans or is it now for the first time enjoying the peaceful rest it has given them for so long? Is it relieved, sad or even angry? Frustrated at still feeling strangely out of place after 128 years with its rustic wooden façade? Bitter, not feeling at home because it has sacrificed its time to others?

And who has now taken up residence in its rooms, corridors, walls, holes and pipes? Are there perhaps still unredeemed souls trapped in the house? Stories and secrets that want to come to light?

Two creatures are on the move within the walls, knowing which steps to take and which to avoid. Which doors to open, which to keep closed. They scour the house in search of freedom and demand answers. Come and help them!

with Laura Remmler, Folkert Dücker and Leah Lichtwitz
