Grounded Scenes through Truthful Emotion

In the organizer's words:

Are you familiar with fast, funny, high-energy, premise-based comedy where split-seconds choices, instant stereotypical characters, and wit have you laughing your [body part of choice] off? Great!

Now let's do the exact opposite!

In this workshop we will explore what happens when we play very slowly, in what I like to call "infinite scenes" - scenes that feel like they are an infinity minutes long. We will pour our own experiences into our characters to blur the distinction between actor and character. We will work with real emotions drawn from our true selves. We will dispense with all of our comedy tools like time jumps and cuts, and ground ourselves in the moment. We will be fully present with each other, for a very long time. We will intensify tension and focus on relationships instead of premise and events. We will infuse our scenes with raw emotional charge.

The workshop is very practical, and consists almost entirely of scenework.

Level

Improvisers of all levels are welcome. The only prerequisite is a mindset of vulnerability and a readiness to explore real, potentially uncomfortable emotions. A certain amount of tolerance for (emotional) discomfort is required.

If you are unsure about whether this workshop is a good choice for you, please reach out to Georgi or Edyta. We're happy to answer your questions!

About the teacher

Georgi has been passionate about improv since discovering the artform in 2017. He founded The Blue Couch improv group a year later, where he serves as creative director and regularly performs longform shows. In 2024 he co-founded Edge Improv Lab in order to share his knowledge and experience with others in Munich. Also in 2024 he co-founded The Mind Meld, a platform that enables improvisers from different local groups and communities to play together. He occasionally runs workshops at Rice Cookie Improv. You can also find him every year at the Sofia Improv Festival.
