Its success story is as unique as the musical itself: The authors of GREASE, Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, certainly had no idea in the early 1970s what a crazy idea could turn into on a beer-soaked night. Their love story between cool Danny and shy Sandy, who meet again under new circumstances at Rydell High School after a vacation fling at the beginning of the school year, is still considered one of the most beautiful high school romances. After its world premiere in Chicago in 1971, GREASE went on to become one of the most successful musicals of all time with a seven-and-a-half-year run on Broadway in New York in 1972 and 3388 sold-out performances. The legendary film adaptation of the musical in 1978, in which John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sang their way into the hearts of audiences all over the world as the new Hollywood dream couple, turned GREASE into a cult hit. The film's soundtrack spent 12 weeks at number 1 in the USA, and by February 1998 it had been in the top five of the US pop charts for 244 consecutive weeks and is still an evergreen today.
