Although Goethe spent more of his life in Bohemia than in Italy, scholarly interest is unevenly distributed, which is probably due to the fact that Goethe experienced a "rebirth" in Italy and elevated himself to the status of a classicist. His numerous stays in Bohemia are hardly less significant in terms of biography and intellectual history, as the spas were both an intellectual marketplace and a place of refuge for him - in the midst of a changing world. But that's not all: compared to the many spa travelers who showed little interest in the Bohemian landscape, it is precisely the special achievement of Goethe, a visitor to Bohemia, who was deeply interested in the culture and history of the country, that proves his worth.
