In the midst of a society in economic decline, young Elisabeth tries to find her little happiness in life. But old debts weigh her down. She also needs a traveling salesman's license in order to work as a saleswoman. She decides to sign her body over to the anatomical institute while she is still alive. She doesn't succeed, but an employee lends her something for the certificate. When he finds out that Elisabeth is using the money to pay off her debts, he reports her to the police and she is put behind bars. When she is released, she meets the policeman Klostermeyer. Once again, the dream of a secure existence seems to be getting closer. However, when Klostermeyer finds out that Elisabeth is in prison, the situation escalates.

Horváth himself described his play, published in 1933, as a "little dance of death in five pictures". In impressive scenes, he describes the struggle of the individual in a ruthless society divided into rich and poor.
