He just can't keep his Saxon goose down, commented the Berliner Zeitung when Clemens Meyer complained about the jury's decision at the German Book Prize. You can add what he can do: write! With heart and mind, with the courage to take the big picture and the necessary seriousness towards the story, including that of his characters. "Die Projektoren" is the novel that everyone has been waiting for, because he doesn't forget to tell the story when he looks at the present, which is shattered by the past. Because he has his heart in the right place, as each of his characters testifies. And because he is able like no other to illuminate the circumstances of the big political stage in literary terms and to show their consequences for individual people.
"The Projectors" is a spectacle dedicated to the cinema of childhood. It is an adventure novel that sends right-wing extremist youths from the wild German West to the Balkans - to one of the cruelest wars in European history after 1945. It is a loud outcry in the face of the violence that has devastated and continues to devastate the continent. A book that can only be written by someone who doesn't mince his words, who doesn't allow himself to be dazzled - and who is also something else: a great reader. Cornelia Geißler, one of the most subtle critics currently writing, talks to Clemens Meyer.
The event will be recorded by SWR radio.
