GERT UND UWE TOBIAS - Das Blaue vom Himmel

In the organizer's words:

Gert and Uwe Tobias (born 1973) are among the best-known printmakers of their generation. In the past, the artist duo has not only updated the technique of woodcuts, but has also created a multifaceted and multi-layered oeuvre that includes collages, drawings, sculptures, murals and installations in addition to woodcuts.

The works created by Gert and Uwe Tobias in joint authorship are created in the field of tension between cultural memory and individual imagination. Their works draw on images from various sources and genres: from art-historical motifs to pop-cultural elements and motifs from Transylvanian folklore. Over the past two decades, they have developed their own individual artistic cosmos with great inventiveness based on a wide variety of stylistic sources of inspiration. While their early works were initially based on folkloristic motifs and scenes, on the basis of which they developed something new, for some years now they have expanded their spectrum of content to include the art history of earlier epochs.

The show at the Kunsthalle Tübingen and a catalog developed for the exhibition with installation photographs presents an overview of their artistic exchange with genres of 'high art' such as still life, portraits and interiors using old and new groups of works.

The expansive installation developed for the rooms of the Kunsthalle combines the artist duo's different media into a whole. Last but not least, it illustrates how Gert and Uwe Tobias use their creative imagination to expand their world in infinite metamorphoses, thus opening up new and impressive imaginative spaces by reinventing the traditional technique of woodcutting for the present day.
