Frei und grenzenlos

In the organizer's words:

The story begins in 1987, and even though "perestroika" and "glasnost" bring movement to the USSR, not much of this can be felt in the GDR. While bookseller Lukas Bach is content with the conditions behind the "Iron Curtain" and expresses his displeasure through political jokes at best, his wife Heike and his half-brother, the renowned actor Paul Keller, are increasingly critical of the system - in the constant awareness that the state has its ears everywhere.

Meanwhile, in West Berlin, German studies student Jonas appreciates the few advantages on the other side of the Wall, where the books he needs for his studies are practically thrown at him. He also meets the love of his life, Lena, in Lukas' bookshop on Alexanderplatz of all places. But what future can a relationship have if Jonas is only allowed to cross the border for 45 days a year - without overnight stays, of course ...?

Heike soon loses her job at the day nursery because she is not "loyal enough", and Paul also gets smaller and smaller roles until he is kicked out of the ensemble as a "person endangering the state". Her desire to "cross over", to finally be free and without boundaries, grows ever greater. But what consequences would that have for the two of them - and for Lukas ...?

35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall - a world-historical event that was the starting point for the reunification of Germany and has moved us all is celebrating its anniversary. Reason enough for Kay Kruppa and Frank Pinkus to write a play that captures the emotional range of these events at close quarters - enriched with contemporary songs from East and West, from the Puhdys, Karat and City to Nina Hagen, Nena, Udo Lindenberg and Herbert Grönemeyer.
