With representatives of the Leipzig women's shelters

Women's shelters are a central shelter for women affected by violence - but how did they actually come about? What has changed since then? What challenges do they face today? And how can women's shelters be made even more accessible and barrier-free?

The idea of women's shelters emerged in the 1970s in an international feminist context, when women began to demand shelters from domestic violence. The first women's shelters were founded in the USA and Great Britain, followed by many other countries, including Germany. In 1990, the first autonomous women's shelter was opened in Leipzig by Frauen für Frauen e.V. - it was the first women's shelter in the new federal states. Since then, the number of places and counseling services in Leipzig has steadily increased. Today, there are four women's shelters in Leipzig, an emergency shelter and numerous advice centers that offer comprehensive support for women affected by violence.

At the panel discussion, representatives of Leipzig's women's shelters will discuss the history of women's shelters, differences and their joint fight for protection against violence. They will discuss existing hurdles for those affected, the safety of the locations and the question of how shelters can be maintained and strengthened in the long term.
