Frans Hals. Meister des Augenblicks

In the organizer's words:

In 2024, Berlin celebrates one of the greatest portrait painters of all time: Frans Hals. In addition to expressive portraits of the Haarlem elite, he was also the first Dutch artist to paint social outsiders as individuals in portrait format. In cooperation with the National Gallery, London, and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Gemäldegalerie is presenting a comprehensive monographic exhibition on Frans Hals with around 75 works.

Alongside Rembrandt and Vermeer, Frans Hals (1582/83-1666) is one of the most outstanding Dutch painters of the 17th century. As a portrait painter, he was unconventional, expressive and innovative. His rediscovery in the 19th century shaped the development of modern painting like no other artist of the early modern period. Within a few years, Hals became a cult painter whose works were in great demand and increasingly highly traded.

In addition to a high-quality selection of paintings by Hals, the special exhibition in Berlin also shows works by his circle, thus positioning him as an exceptional figure in the context of his time. The 75 works include around 50 of the most important paintings by Frans Hals from over 20 public and private collections in Europe, the USA and Canada - including highlights such as "Isaac Abrahamsz. Massa and Beatrix van der Laen" from the Rijksmuseum, the "Young Man with a Skull" from the National Gallery in London or "The Lute Player" from the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Works that have never been shown in Germany before will also be on display, such as the monumental, over four-meter-wide "De magere compagnie".

"Frans Hals. Master of the Moment" can be seen from 12.07.2024 to 03.11.2024 in the Gemäldegalerie am Kulturforum in Berlin.
