Silent films: Framing the Archive
Black actors from early silent film enter into a dialog with feminist perspectives of today. Until the 1960s, people of color could only gain access to mainstream cinema by conforming to white expectations in appearance and behavior. At the same time, Josephine Baker and the comedians Minnie Devreaux and Bertha Regustus left their mark on many films with their outstanding talent. The pioneers of Indian cinema also pushed the plot forward in the role of powerful goddesses. Marnie Gracia Mommertz, Terri Frances, Alison Starr and Iyesha Geeth Abbas explain the extent to which they emancipated themselves from clichés and can inspire us to rethink blackness in a differentiated way.

The silent short films and fragments will be accompanied live by Raissa Mehner on electric guitar and Huguette Tolinga on percussion.
