The French composer Emmanuel Chabrier opens his "Suite pastorale" (1888) with the classical shepherd's instrument, the delicate sounding flute, and unfolds an atmospheric rural panorama that was probably inspired by his native Auvergne. Mozart's festive and cheerful double concerto, composed in Paris in 1778, also exudes French esprit, in which the flute and harp play gallantly off each other. Unlike Mozart, whose "occasional work" flowed quickly from his pen, 12 years passed before Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his 3rd Symphony, which he had begun during a trip to Scotland - probably also because he lacked the inspiring fog at home on the mainland.
