After his 2017 film "When God Sleeps", Till Schauder returns with his wife and creative partner, first-time director Sara Nodjoumi, with an investigative documentary about one of Iran's most revolutionary artists, Nickzad "Nicky" Nodjoumi. Born in Iran but living in New York City, Nodjoumi traveled back to Iran to join the Islamic Revolution, creating paintings and posters that criticized the Shah's regime. In 1980, the painter fled his home country after his solo exhibition "Report on the Revolution" at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art was destroyed and subsequently closed by radical Islamists. Decades later, as Iran is once again embroiled in protests after Iranian women and activists were repressed and killed by the Iranian "morality police", the renowned artist and his daughter Sara attempt to track down the missing paintings in the hope of getting them back.During the search, Sara, drawing on disarmingly frank conversations with her father and mother, the famous artist Nahid Hagigat, and grappling with complex feelings and secrets related to her own upbringing, traces a timeline of events. She tries to understand the circumstances that have led to the constant political turmoil in her home country and her parents' personal estrangement, mirroring the difficult journey of many immigrant families caught in the crossfire of politics and life.Filmmakers Sara Nodjoumi and Till Schauder are equally introspective and investigative, weaving the personal and the political into a compelling political thriller. Ostwestpassagen' is a private foundation run on a voluntary basis. It contributes to the dialog between cultures and focuses its work on a peace-promoting discourse between Orient and Occident. In keeping with the name of the foundation, events are held that highlight the diverse and multi-layered connections between the cultures and promote mutual understanding.
