Ah Tao has worked for the Leung family in Hong Kong for sixty years, raising the children and taking care of the household. She has seen three generations grow up. But that is now over. After suffering a stroke, she decides to leave work behind and move into a retirement home. Roger, the last of the Leungs still living at home, helps her with this and tries to be there for her in other ways too, as a thank you for the many years she has been there for everyone. This is not easy for her, as she is not used to receiving so much attention. And then there's her health, which is increasingly declining ...

Almost 300,000 domestic helpers work in Hong Kong, many of them foreigners. According to a legal regulation, they have to live with their employers, which means they are very close to the family. Many maids are also nannies and often spend more time with the children than their employers, which strengthens the bond even further.

In her touching and light drama "Tao Jie - A Simple Life", Hong Kong director Ann Hui sensitively tells the story of one such employee who has become part of the family over decades and now needs care herself in old age.
