Film & Gespräch: Dahomey

As part of Provenance Research Day, we are showing the award-winning film by director Mati Diop (DOK, 2024, OmU, 67 min). In 2021, 26 art treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey left Paris and returned to their country of origin, today's Benin. Together with thousands of other objects, they were looted by French colonial troops in 1892. But how are the returning objects received in a country that has changed dramatically in their absence?

The film sheds light on various perspectives on appropriation, restitution and self-determination. The objects themselves have their say in the film and enter into a dialog with the audience. Following the screening, we invite you to an audience discussion.
