Soon after his death, the Bertolt Brecht Archive was founded for this purpose, which today also preserves all 54 surviving notebooks. They could hardly be more different, not only in their appearance, but also in their appearance and use: Sometimes they may appear as objects of art, sometimes as objects of daily use, sometimes they turn dots and commas into philological disputes, sometimes they give rise to new interpretations of works, sometimes they simply leave us baffled.
