Under the title "Listening with Helmholtz", the Heidelberg contributions to the 3rd Biennale for New Music of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region 2025 refer in particular to Hermann von Helmholtz, his teaching and research time in Heidelberg (1858 to 1870) and his fundamental "Theory of Sound Sensations" written there.
Musical practice and science are mutually related: The project combines seminars, lectures and introductions with (partly public) rehearsals for five concert events. Six commissioned works of new music will be premiered by SCHOLA HEIDELBERG and ensemble aisthesis under the direction of Walter Nuรbaum and Ekkehard Windrich, and there will also be an organ concert and further lecture events with music (for example at the Institute of Physics at Heidelberg University).
In the spirit of Hermann von Helmholtz, the musical project thrives on collaboration with or between renowned scientists from various institutes or faculties (in particular) at Heidelberg University, such as the Institute of Theoretical Physics (Prof. Dr. Salmhofer), the University Hospital and the DKFZ (Prof. Dr. Monyer), and it integrates interdisciplinary courses, for example from the Musicology Seminar (Prof. Dr. Wiesenfeldt) with the Philosophy Seminar (Prof. Dr. Brรผllmann) and the KlangForum Heidelberg in WS 2024/25, as well as a research cooperation within the Marsilius Kolleg (Prof. Dr. Wiesenfeldt, PD Dr. Rupp) and other academic cooperations.
