"Point out what we don't know or can't understand. Believe in the mystery of the unknown.
Allow the work to be prominent.
The composition itself does not change: People making use of it, pushing it beyond its own limits, to turn it into something always changing. These people are everyone. Not only the musicians but the audience and everybody being part whenever the music is around. It can be everything. It can be nothing. Whatever is recent. "
Recent, Fabian Dudek's new trio, is dedicated to unadulterated contrasts. Together with London-based bassist Ruth Goller and drummer Kate Gentile from New York, the Cologne-based saxophonist and composer explores simplicity and thus sets a counterpoint to his earlier works. Many of his previous projects and compositions deal with musical structures that are characterized by a certain complexity. With Recent, Dudek wants to come close to the radiance of the spirit of the present in a simple way. There are no compromises. On the contrary: Dudek only offers moods, rhythms, harmonies and melodies and what follows is at the discretion of the musicians and the constitution of the moment: perceiving, interpreting, ignoring and processing happens together. Combined with the great energetic range of all three participants, everything that can be expected becomes possible.
Fabian Dudek was nominated for the German Record Critics' Award at the beginning of 2024 with his album "Protecting A Picture That's Fading" (La Campagne) and for the German Jazz Award 2024 in the "Composition/Arrangement" category with the title composition of the same name. His most recent release "Distant Skies, We Dream" was also recently nominated for the German Record Critics' Award.
