Shortly after the end of the Second World War, a young American of German descent returns to Europe to help rebuild his devastated homeland. His uncle gets him a job as a sleeping car conductor. On his journey through ruined post-war Germany, he becomes increasingly entangled in an inscrutable web of Allies and old Nazis and himself becomes a pawn in political and human intrigue.
