The guest country of this year's festival is China. The Heidelberg Play Market festival team has selected guest performances that were not conceived for a Western audience, but for a Chinese audience, which allows an extraordinary insight into this fascinating theater landscape.

In China, many theater texts are rooted in the country's rich literary tradition, which contemporary playwrights relate to the modern, high-tech society of the People's Republic. Examples of this are the works "The Story of the Peach Blossom Fan Retold" by the Routine Poems Institute and "The True Story of Ah Q" by the NEW YOUTH GROUP from Beijing. On the other hand, many authors work with interview sequences and documentary material, such as Xu Hongchang, whose family epic "A Good Year (Act 1)" will have its world premiere as a staged reading in Heidelberg.
