This year's European Month of Photography (EMOP) is dedicated to the theme "What stands between us". The Institut français Berlin is participating with the exhibition "The transgressive power of sorrow" curated by Camille Leprince.
Photography, as understood by the EMOP, is deeply sociological and documentary. It makes it possible to describe social and societal reality in a world in constant flux. In view of the current threats to democracy, the EMOP sees photography as a means of creating dialogue within society rather than contributing to its polarization.
With the contributions of nine Ukrainian photographers - Igor Chekachkov, Oleg Dimov, Lesha Berezovskiy, Mishka Bochkaryov, Veronika Mol, Xenia Petrovska, Iva Sidash, Elena Subach, Oleksandra Zborovska - the exhibition presents photographs that break away from the traditional aesthetics of photojournalism. They combine documentary and poetic elements that vividly evoke the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
