The Emil Brandqvist Trio is now a permanent fixture on the European jazz circuit and is enjoying greater popularity with every album, reaching number 3 in the German jazz charts, for example. The success of the three Nordic men is really impressive when you look at the digital music world, as their compositions have now been streamed almost 50 million times, making them important representatives of Nordic jazz music in North America, for example, in which strong melodies and sophisticated arrangements combine to create concise and always atmospheric pieces. The Gothenburg drummer and composer Emil Brandqvist and his trio partners Max Thornberg on double bass and Tuomas A. Turunen on piano, who have been constant for six albums, move through worlds of sound that are as poetic as they are pictorial. It is fair to say that this trio is one of the few in Europe to have found its very own sound, which has been euphorically celebrated by audiences.
The new album "Layers Of Life" is undoubtedly the highlight of their work to date. Thirteen new songs penned by Emil Brandqvist impress with delicate, highly complex and yet catchy arrangements, and one of the album's central tracks, "Solitude", was co-authored by Finnish pianist Tuomas A. Turunen. It is already a good tradition that Brandqvist has also invited the Sjöströmska String Quartet into the studio for some songs in order to expand the trio format into a broad sound. Maija Kauhanen (kantele, voice and harmonium) and his brother Martin Brandqvist, who occasionally adds flute, clarinet and bass clarinet, have also been invited to refine the soundscapes. Emil Brandqvist himself is not one to miss the opportunity to set special accents by using a Moog synthesizer.
