"Perhaps the most surprising thing about this Disney adaptation of DORNRÖSCHEN is how much the story differs from the one told in German nurseries. This can partly be attributed to the fact that Erdman Penner's screenplay is based on Charles Perrault's 'La Belle au bois dormant'. In part, however, Penner has simply taken the liberty of turning the story on its head.

DORNRÖSCHEN was not a huge success when it was released at the end of 1959 [...], but over time its visual splendor won over even the biggest critics. This is mainly due to the magnificent background paintings by Eyvind Earle, whose style was based on images from the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. Before that, however, there is a plot that is very accessible even for young children. In the first half, the three fairies deliver plenty of comic slapstick sequences, while in the last third, things get very exciting and sometimes a little threatening in Malefiz's formidable and wonderfully menacing castle."
