King Henry and Queen Catherine had to wait a long time for their big dream to come true: A baby daughter is born. However, Princess Aurora's christening is not only attended by friends and good fairies bearing gifts, but also by the evil fairy Carabosse. She puts a curse on the child: on her 16th birthday, Aurora will prick herself on a spindle and die. However, the lilac fairy manages to weaken the death curse into a 100-year sleep, which can only be ended by a kiss of true love. Despite all caution, what was prophesied comes true. On her 16th birthday, the girl stabs herself and - together with the entire court - falls into a deep sleep. It is not until 100 years later that Prince Florimund overcomes all the obstacles put in his way by Carabosse in his search for the princess and finds Aurora. He awakens her with a kiss, and nothing stands in the way of their wedding and a happy future.
As one of the most famous and popular classical ballets, "Sleeping Beauty" occupies a very special place in the oeuvre of Peter I. Tchaikovsky. The composer himself even described the masterpiece, which premiered in 1890, as his best ballet. It was created in close collaboration between Tchaikovsky and Marius Petipa, probably the most important choreographer of the 19th century, and fascinates audiences with its formal perfection and highly developed choreographic and musical expression. And indeed, "Sleeping Beauty", which is based on an old fairy tale by Charles Perrault, boasts top dance performances by the many soloists and the entire corps de ballet, as well as a heart-warming plot.
