Don Quixote loves romances of chivalry and fantasizes so much about the fictional worlds of his books that he no longer distinguishes between reality and fiction. He even believes himself to be a noble knight and sets out into the world with his rickety horse Rosinante to win the heart of a lady. He is accompanied by his faithful squire Sancho Panza, with whom he experiences numerous adventures along the way. Most of these end with Don Quixote being beaten up or winning against innocents with dubious fame as a "knight of sad countenance". In the end, Don Quixote returns to his village after a duel as a defeated knight, without having found the woman of his heart. Back home, shortly before his death, he recognizes his mistake and dies.

Director Michael Uhl has already staged several productions for the Niederdeutsches Schauspiel and will bring this important work of world literature to the stage in a Low German translation by Cornelia Ehlers.
