"I was born under a table...",

This is how the life book of Dolores Prato (1892-1983) begins. Born out of wedlock, Dolores grew up with relatives in the Marche (Treja), feeling unloved and lonely. She worked as a teacher and journalist and only began writing literature late in life. When "Giù la piazza non c'è niente" was first published in 1980 in an abridged version (by Natalia Ginzburg), the book immediately became a literary sensation. Dolores Prato tells the story of domestic rituals, of carnival balls among the nobility and the people and of magical practices - clear-sighted and enchanting at the same time. The story of her childhood at the end of the 19th century is the unique painting of a vanished Italy, the internationally acclaimed rediscovery of the great unknown of Italian literature (Hanser // Engl. by Anna Leube // with an afterword by Esther Kinsky).
