The documentary film series VISIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY shows exciting and solution-oriented documentaries on sustainability topics such as climate protection, resource conservation and well-being in harmony.
Each film is followed by a discussion with experts, as well as further workshops and excursions at the Volkshochschule Freiburg. The series is curated by an interdisciplinary research team as part of the Innovation Campus Sustainability (ICN). Together with the implementation partners and the audience, the researchers want to find out what motivates people to engage with such films, how they get involved in discussions and workshops and how they participate in transformation processes towards a more ecologically sustainable society. Freiburg's Mayor for the Environment, Christine Buchheit, has taken on the patronage of the project.
Admission to all films in the Visions of Sustainability documentary film series is free, registration via the adult education center is required.
April 29, 8 p.m.: OUR SOIL, OUR HERITAGE
Director: Marc Uhlig | Germany 2019 | Documentary
After the oceans, healthy soils are the largest reservoir for greenhouse gases and make a significant contribution to reducing CO2. But it takes our planet more than 2,000 years to form ten centimeters of fertile soil. And yet we use our soils as if they were inexhaustible. This means that our food source is endangered - by us humans! What does this mean for the future? How must agriculture and society change so that we can pass on a living world with living soils to our children? The documentary Our Soil, Our Heritage shows how important and at the same time extremely threatened our basis of life, the soil, is. Director Marc Uhlig vividly conveys why this precious resource deserves our greatest appreciation. Because we can all contribute to preserving soil fertility - whether as farmers, gardeners or consumers in the supermarket! Experts such as TV chef Sarah Wiener and environmental scientist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker provide valuable food for thought. An inspiring plea for future-proof agriculture and sustainable nutrition.

Director: Manon Turina, François Marques | France 2023 | Documentary
A city that combines the benefits of the countryside with the advantages of the urban world. Manon and François, two young city dwellers, travel the world in search of concrete initiatives to bring nature back into the hearts of cities. Between the serenity of the green skyscrapers of Japan, the unusual mushroom production in a dark Parisian parking lot or a crazy Canadian supermarket that grows its products on the roof, they discover positive and accessible solutions that are already working. Along the way, they meet people with revolutionary ideas. By connecting all these solutions, they offer us their vision of what the beautiful city of tomorrow could look like.

June 24, 8 p.m.: OUTGROW THE SYSTEM
Director: Cecilia Paulsson, Anders Nielsson | Sweden 2023
The original meaning of the word "economy" is "housekeeping". However, today's economy does not consist of households, but rather of the consumption of our finite natural resources at an alarming rate. "Outgrow the System" explores how we can get back to the essence of the term and design an economic system that truly manages our scarce resources. Beyond the narrow mainstream debate and the teachings of business schools, many new economic ideas and practices are emerging. They challenge old assumptions and offer new perspectives on how we can reorganize our production and consumption to ensure our survival as a species on this planet. "Outgrow the System" aims to bring these transformative ideas to the fore. It celebrates the wealth of creativity and ideas that exist around the world and urges them to collide and grow together. The film envisions a world where social movements worldwide can unite behind positive visions, rather than just opposing dystopias.
