The Dixieland Festival, which has been running continuously for half a century, is one of the most important and oldest jazz festivals in the world and is now the largest and oldest festival for traditional jazz in the world. Renowned events in this category include festivals in Sacramento (California), the "capital of jazz" New Orleans, the renowned Montreux in Switzerland, Prague in the "Golden City", Edinburgh in Scotland, the Jazz Jamboree in Warsaw, the festival in Breda in the Netherlands and the Danish FEMO Festival. The joyful, brilliant and fascinating days and nights of the INTERNATIONAL DIXIELAND FESTIVAL in Dresden have developed so quickly that word has spread in jazz circles in many countries: "If you want to experience Dixieland at its finest or even create it yourself, you simply have to be there in the city on the Elbe."
Dixie-Dresden is praised for its extraordinary atmosphere. It's jazzy and swinging, versatile and legendary, bluesy and gospel. These characteristics make the festival unique and underline its outstanding status.
After the small anniversary festival to mark the 40th year, Dresden entered its fifth decade of old-time Dixieland jazz music gatherings in 2011 with the "First Big Band Party". The music of important big bands such as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Glenn Miller was particularly well received. The Hungarian Gyula Ensemble and the Dresden formation played so impressively and swinging that the desire for a repeat performance was unmistakable.
