"What could be more shameful than marrying behind your father's back against all business interests?" The rich merchants Argante and Géronte have agreed a special deal. The son of one is to marry the daughter of the other so that their money and wealth will increase. When they are on a business trip, the young people have no better idea than to fall in love without a care in the world: Leandre, Géronte's son, woos Zerbinette, a girl of questionable parentage. And Octave, Argante's son, even secretly marries the penniless Hyacinthe. Needless to say, things go awry - and the cunning servant Scapin has his hands full trying to lead the young couple to their happy ending.
Molière wrote this farce in the style of commedia dell'arte. The rebellious Scapin is the first time in European theater that a servant enters the stage as the main character. In his adaptation, translator and long-time artistic director of the Bad Hersfeld Festival Peter Lotschak places this lavish comedy in its historical context: he has Molière's troupe appear in the flesh and perform "The Pranks of Scapin" in front of our eyes as theater in the theater.
