Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most important poets in German literature, created a work in The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774) that not only shaped his time, but also reflected parts of his own life. The work also marked his Europe-wide breakthrough. Inspired by personal experiences - in particular his unhappy love for Charlotte Buff - he processed his deepest feelings in this epistolary novel. It is therefore no coincidence that Werther shares Goethe's birthday and his great passion for mines. His literary work continued to take shape in Leipzig. The Sorrows of Young Werther became a bestseller immediately after its publication at the Leipzig Book Fair and triggered a Europe-wide media scandal.

It is the story of a loving young man whose emotional world constantly collides with merciless reality and social expectations. He loves Lotte, who inspires him with her stunning natural manner. But she has already been promised to the wealthy Albert. How far does true love go?

Goethe's epistolary novel is representative of the young generation's perpetual search for themselves and true love. This leads to a gripping interplay of tragedy and lightness, comedy and melancholy, which must be playfully explored ... Werther's love frenzy ends in the only possible consequence for him.
