Die Kinder der Kämpfer

In the organizer's words:

The film documentary DIE KINDER DER KÄMPFER (The Children of the Fighters ) is the first to focus on a little-noticed chapter of Austrian history from the perspective of the 2nd and 3rd generation: the Republican Protection League. It was formed in 1923/24 as a counterweight to the Christian-social Heimwehr. From February 12-14, 1934, social democrats and communists tried to defend the republic against Austrofascism with weapons in their hands. To mark the 90th anniversary of the February battles, DIE KINDER DER KÄMPFER not only visits the original sites, but also searches for the children and grandchildren of the now deceased fighters. This documentary captures their memories and experiences - as a historical document for posterity. Scientists who evaluate the events and their consequences also have their say.

How much do THE CHILDREN OF THE FIGHTERS shape the events of February 1934 to this day? What does it mean to be a child of the Schutzbund? What can be learned for the future from the events themselves, but also from the perspectives and experiences of the CHILDREN OF THE FIGHTERS?

The project was initiated and significantly shaped by the brothers Fred & Georg Turnheim. Their father Friedrich (Fritz) Turnheim was a chemist and Schutzbündler and produced hand grenades for the fighters in Vienna in 1934. Due to a serious illness (polio), he was unable to take part directly in the fighting. He was arrested after February 12, 1934. He managed to escape to the Soviet Union via Prague during a visit to an ordination during his imprisonment.

We will show the film and then talk to the director, the descendant of the resistance fighter and the film's protagonist Lisl Spira-Nitsch.
