by Bertolt Brecht - Premiere on May 3, 2025 - Schauspielhaus, Großes Haus - Schauspiel
Brecht's "Saint Joan" is the lively story of the strange encounter between the warm-hearted idealist Johanna Dark and the cool money man Pierpont Mauler. As exciting as a thriller. It is an encounter between two unequal people. It takes place against the backdrop of the first great economic crisis of the 20th century in the bloody mass slaughterhouses of the big cities and is told lyrically and prosaically - in all the multifaceted beauty that language is capable of.
In his play, Brecht tells of how it becomes impossible for people to escape the power of the market, the influence of money. And how we become monstrous as a result. He tells of the delusional, contradictory nature of man, who must repeatedly endure his own inner turmoil and realize that greed and selflessness, anger and understanding, disgust and love reside within him at the same time. It is a text that reaches far into our present day, in which the markets determine our lives to an even greater extent and distort our view.
The production is directed by Roger Vontobel, whose productions, including "William Tell" and "Hamlet", have shaped the D'haus repertoire for many years.
