What kind of book is it that inspires such different personalities as Elfriede Jelinek and Hengameh Yaghoobifarah? Even the title sounds laconically capital: "A pile of dollar bills". The author: Esther Dischereit, who looks behind the scenes of society like no other. It is about a Jewish family and their "crazy family scenario between Berlin, Chicago, Heppenheim and Rome". But it is also about society's unwavering hypocrisy in dealing with the German crimes of the Nazi era and their continuity. Esther Dischereit tells of the outrageous with such dry humor, with such a deep feeling for grief, she reacts to the outrageous in such a formally consistent way that this book should be on everyone's lips.
It was Esther Dischereit's wish not only to read, but also to talk to the criminal defense lawyer Onur Özata about the highly topical themes of her unavoidably global family and social novel. He has represented the joint plaintiff in sensational cases such as the Stutthof concentration camp and the Halle attack. Shirin Sojitrawalla brings the two of them into conversation about German conditions.
