THE DEEP-SEA FISH
by Marieluise Fleißer in an adaptation by Andrea Kindt
Marieluise Fleißer, according to Elfriede Jelinek the "greatest playwright of the 20th century", was rediscovered in the 1960s by young playwrights such as Rainer Werner Faßbinder and Franz Xaver Kroetz - after early successes in Brecht's circle. The critic Alfred Kerr simply called her work "a possession". Her language is gripping and manages without decorative epithets. Every sentence is a revelation, including the story of Gesine and Laurenz, who make each other's lives hell in a furnished room. Aside from the daily destruction, the play tells of what was happening in small German towns at the beginning of the 1930s and ultimately put an end to writers of Fleißer's caliber.
