Description:
Hugo von Hofmannsthal's first sketches of scenes for Der Rosenkavalier already inspired Richard Strauss - he sensed a great success and was proved right, as Der Rosenkavalier, a comedy of high nobility in a fantasized 18th century Vienna, is one of Strauss' most frequently performed operas today. Strauss and Hofmannsthal take the artificiality of the imagined world to extremes in language and music in a wonderfully peculiar way, allowing it to grow into a dreamlike and nightmarish scenario. In his opulent production, Barrie Kosky enriches the familiar characters of Sophie and Octavian, Ochs and Marschallin with surprising facets and adds an exciting chapter to the Munich production history of the work.
